This event will be held

Wednesday, November 4,2009

Join C&M Education Charities (CM Educate) at River Ridge Golf Club for our first annual golf tournament. River Ridge opened for play in late 1998, yet its verdant greens, fairways and natural design amidst the old-growth pecan and oak trees yield a beauty and maturity decades older.

CMeducate_GolfTournament.pdf

The sixty-foot drop in elevation from the clubhouse on the river ridge to the bank of the Brazos River provide a spectacular vista, raised tees and greens unlike anything in the greater Houston area. One of ‘The Best 18 Holes of the New Generation’ according to Golf Digest. Former PGA Pro Jay Riviere designed this masterpiece-a veteran golf course architect whose inspiration comes from actually having played the world’s greatest courses.

Sponsors will be recognized on signage at the tournament, on CM Educate web site and the media. The day will begin with a relaxed lunch of burgers and concludes with River Ridge’s famous barbeque, a silent auction and the tournament awards.
Visit www.riverridgegolfclub.com for more information.
Effective teaching is paramount for the future success of our children. CM Educate was founded in 2005 to eliminate the achievement gap for all children by creating the CONNIE® Model; a teacher training method based on neuroscience research and effective learning strategies. The science-based curriculum integrates language, fine arts, and mathematics in a collaborative learning environment implemented for the last four years in Houston ISD at Halpin Early Childhood Center.

Your contributions will go to help CM Educate train and assist teachers in their classrooms by providing the resources and support
for the implementation of the CONNIE® Model.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8216071.stm

Six-year-old Sam Pointon from Leicester wrote to the museum and applied to replace retiring director Andrew Scott.

In his application Sam wrote: “I have an electric train track. I am good on my train track. I can control two trains at once.”

Bosses were so taken with his enthusiasm they offered him a role as director of fun.

Sam said: “It is the best job in the world. I love it. It is good fun.

“My favourite is the steam engine, I like it when the wheels go round.”

Asked what qualified him for the role at the railways museum, he answered: “I’ve been on loads of trains, including the Eurostar.”

His proud mother Lorraine said: “Like any little boy of his age he is train-mad.

“He’s very interested in the moving parts and pistons. He can’t get enough of them.

“He thinks now he has got this job he won’t have to go to school. We had to tell him he still has to go to school.”

Mrs Pointon said the family was on holiday when her husband noticed an advert in a newspaper announcing the retirement of Mr Scott.

She said: “We started teasing Sam saying it would be his dream job.

“When we got back from holiday he started to write a letter and we ended up posting it.

“The next thing we know we are invited to the museum and Sam is director of fun.

“We were invited back and had a great day at the museum. It was Sam’s third trip there, but I think we might be going again soon.”

Mr Scott said Sam’s letter of application was a delight to read.

He added: “It’s always fantastic to see such young children with a real passion for trains, just like I had when I was a boy.”

Houston Zoo Mourns Loss of Beloved California Sea Lion

Deano, a charismatic Houston Zoo resident and a senior citizen in the world of California sea lions passed away this morning at his pool in the Houston Zoo’s McGovern Mammal Marina. Deano was 26 years old. “The normal life expectancy of California sea lions ranges between 15 and 25 years, so Deano had a very long and full life for a sea lion,” said Houston Zoo Sea Lion Curator Beth Schaefer
.

“Deano was such a charmer. We are missing him so much right now. He was very special to us and to Zoo guests,” said Schaefer. “Although he was a sea lion senior citizen, Deano was very playful and enjoyed interacting with his keepers and the other California sea lions at the Zoo,” said Schaefer.

Born June 19, 1983, Deano arrived at the Houston Zoo in May 2008 from a marine park in Hawaii. As a young sea lion, Deano was a star performer at several Sea World marine parks. Deano came to the Houston Zoo as a proven breeder male and was introduced to the Zoo’s two young female sea lions, Cali and Kamia. While breeding activity was observed this summer, we will not know until next summer if conception occurred.

Deano’s personality and friendly manner endeared him quickly to his keepers and Zoo guests. Though in his twilight years, Deano enjoyed interacting with his trainers and performing for the public. He was an extremely good natured sea lion who stole the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Deano was an outstanding ambassador for his species and for the Houston Zoo and he will be greatly missed. A necropsy, an animal autopsy has been performed. Results of the procedure may not be known for several weeks.

In February, Deano successfully underwent surgery to remove cataracts from both eyes. In March, Deano returned to the sea lion pool after getting a clean bill of health from his veterinary ophthalmologist. “He made a complete recovery from the procedure and was back to being the Deano we all knew and loved so much,” said Schaefer. “He was spending his days barking at Cali and Kamia and getting to know our newest addition to the group, Astro a young male who arrived a few weeks ago,” said Schaefer.

http://eschouston.blogspot.com/2009/07/esch-client-story-c-m-education.html

ESCH Client Story: C & M Education Consultants

Low educational achievement, disinterest in learning, and behavioral problems observed in elementary school aged children are of significant concern to teachers and parents alike. To help address these challenges, C&M Education Consultants Charities took a novel approach. This nonprofit developed a science curriculum to instill a passion for learning among five to seven-year-olds, using a curriculum grounded in research and knowledge about brain development and learning theory. The program specifically targets at-risk children from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Results show that participation in the curriculum helps inspire these children to pursue a path of higher learning and excellence, rather than skipped classes and carelessness.

C&M’s teacher training instilled basic principles and methodologies to effectively conquer the seemingly impossible task of teaching young children the expansive and complicated world of science. Additionally, parents attended workshops that empowered them with examples and resources to further stimulate their child’s mind outside of the classroom.

Just as the teachers benefited from instruction about how to run their classrooms more effectively, C&M needed help in becoming a more organized and progressive organization.

With a board lacking direction, goals lacking definition, and no clear strategic plan, C&M knew that if change did not come, their organization could very easily wilt away. Funding was an enormous issue, but C&M discovered that the Executive Service Corps of Houston (ESCH) could provide the knowledge and guidance necessary to overcome the obstacles that stood in the way of expansion.

For three Saturdays, the ESCH consultants worked diligently to help C&M organize their numbers into a professional funding proposal. Similar to the daily plans formed for the teachers in the classrooms, ESCH helped C&M formulate a daily agenda targeting the goals and roles of not only the board members, but the whole organization.

With ESCH’s support and consultation, C&M was able to broaden its program reach quickly. Board members became more in tune with the organization and focused on its expansion goals, allowing C&M to direct its staff’s attention to the audacious funding goals. Newly-formed fund-raising and public relations committees helped establish new contracts with additional schools and enhance overall quality of the program.

According to C&M leadership, the improvements resulting from ESCH’s work “left the board members speechless as they were informed that such professional and quality service was provided free of charge.”
